Job Description & Position Posting: Executive Director

Camp Starfish (CSF) is an independent, 501(c)3 non-profit providing summer and year-round programs to children and teens with significant emotional, behavioral, learning and social challenges. We are seeking an experienced leader to be our next Executive Director. This individual will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for staff, programs, expansion, fundraising, fiscal position, community/stakeholder relationship cultivation, and mission execution while ensuring the efficient, effective operations of the organization. The successful candidate will be mission-driven and self-directed with high integrity leadership, a sense of humor, impeccable work ethic, a can-do attitude, proven fundraising ability, and expertise overseeing multifaceted program(s), especially in a camp setting. Min. req.: 5+ yrs organizational management & bachelor’s degree. Advanced degree and/or experience with physical site management a plus. FT/YR with generous benefits, incl. health insurance, vacation and sick leave, holidays and 401k match. Salary commensurate with experience. I’m writing to share some important news with you and the entire Starfish family. Starfish's 20th summer will also be our last with our beloved Executive Director, Emily Golinsky. After leading Starfish for more than 13 years with grace, wit and ingenuity, Emily has decided the time has come to move on to her next adventure. After helping to transition in new executive leadership, Emily will complete her full-time employment with Starfish in January, 2020.

Emily has been the face of Starfish for many years, having taken the helm from co-founder Deb Berman in 2006. During this time, she has touched the lives of more than 3,500 campers and families. From developing programs to managing donor relations, she has lived the mission of fostering the success and growth of Starfish kids every day. The Board — and I believe we speak for the whole Starfish community — is so grateful for Emily's dedication and compassion.

The Board has put together a transition team to head up the search for a new Executive Director. The search itself will be part of a broader strategic planning process that will ensure continuity in our provision of fun and therapeutic services to kids and families each summer and throughout the year. 

All of us here at Starfish, including our longtime Director of Operations, Deana Stephens, and Camp Director, Jamie Mahnken, and our new year-round team members Laura Petersen (Director of Staff Experience) and Ben Wiley (Site & Enrichment Coordinator), as well as our incredible seasonal staff, are looking forward to a wonderful 2019 and an amazing final summer with Emily. A Note From Emily, Our Executive Director

Dear Starfish Family,

I am eternally grateful that Camp Starfish has been my professional home, my career classroom, and my personal companion since 2006. As Starfish has grown, so too have I. Now, it is time for me to seek out my next adventure in life, and also to make room for new leadership who will take Starfish through the next decades. So with a heavy heart, earlier this winter I shared with Carrie my intention to end my full time employment with Starfish on January 31, 2020. After what will be 14 summers and just two months shy of 14 years leading Starfish, I will be moving on with a sense of enormous gratitude to the individuals with whom I have had the privilege to work, and who have in turn worked so hard to build Starfish into a forward-thinking, highly acclaimed and dynamic independent nonprofit. I truly love Starfish, and I have great respect for what the organization does, and also for each of the Board members, year-round staff, seasonal staff, alumni, campers, families, donors and friends who are part of our Starfish family. I will be forever proud to count myself a member of this incredibly special community.

It has been an honor and a privilege to lead Starfish’s significant growth from a Founders’ organization to a fully-fledged non-profit entity. I am particularly proud of the many accomplishments we have notched along the way, including securing the purchase of our permanent home in Rindge, the conception and completion of our winterized conference center facility on site, and the development and expansion of our camper programs and curriculum, including the TIDES transitional life-skills program. As I watch our 2019 summer team come together, I am also immensely proud of an industry-leading, forward-thinking seasonal staff recruitment, training, certification and retention program that is teaching a new generation to work confidently and capably on behalf of youth living with special needs.

Today, Starfish is in a great place. We have a strong Board and year-round team, all of whom are wholeheartedly committed and dedicated to the good work they do. We have effective and highly sought-out programs that help youth facing challenges to learn, grow and have fun. We are a small, yet remarkable, force in the ever-expanding world of services for youth, teens and young adults with special needs. And we are already well into the preparations for welcoming over 300 amazing kiddos to camp during the summer of 2019! Stability and continuity are crucial in the period ahead. I am committed to setting up the next Executive Director for tremendous success, to helping guide a smooth transition when the time comes, and to working hard alongside our transition team and new executive leadership to ensure the bright future of Starfish through 2019 and beyond.

I look forward to the upcoming year alongside an amazing team of leaders, as we delve further into our ongoing strategic planning process and continue the day-to-day work of caring for such a great organization. I cannot thank Starfish, and each and every Starfisher I have come to know over these past many years, enough. Looking back, I think I have been a good steward of Deb’s gift. It is bittersweet as I now look to pass that gift on, though I am confident in my belief that the very best of Starfish is yet to come.
